Saxon onslaught and thoughts on this years projects

Hi folks I thought I would post something that I rarely do, but should do more often which is group photo's of collections. This is my complete Saxon warband for Dux Britanniarum as it stands now. It will get larger as I will add more during the campaign and eventually it will form the core starting force for a Dux Bellorum / Impetus army. I will also do a Late Roman force for Dux Britanniarum /Dux Bellorum/Impetus armies. I expect a lot of action from this period as Nick here is also doing both Early Saxons and Late Romans where we will combine our figures for some big games!:-)

I'm currently working on AWI which has really captured my interest again in a big way and at good time too. I'm trying to paint up the AWI lead mountain before the release of the Perry Continental box set that looks to be superb! I'm not a big fan of plastics, but there are exceptions and this is one that being the Perry Continentals box set which offers you the flexibility one really needs for creating the diverse uniforms of the American armies. As you need the diversity not only in different units, but within individual units. Oh, and they also released mounted  Continental dragoons that look fantastic. When it comes to the AWI period one is really spoiled for choice!:-)

Well, that's where I am now and as usual everything is subject to change, but that looks to be what I'll be doing for awhile.

Thanks for viewing!:-)

  3. Great looking force you have there Christopher. I've been thinking the same thing regards pics of entire forces, as opposed to unit by unit when painted. Nice one.

    1. Thank you kindly Michael. I still prefer unit by unit in general as it takes me along time to get enough for group pictures, but it's nice to show everything together when possible.

  5. Beautiful Saxons, Christopher! Please explain the single, hexagon based figures. Are they leaders, markers, or something else?

Do let us know your impressions of the Perry plastics. I have been eyeing some of those too even though I am not a fan of plastics either.

    1. Thank you very much Jonathan! Sidney Roundwood http://sidneyroundwood.blogspot.de/ created these hexagonal bases for his characters and leaders and I quite liked it so I borrowed(stole) the idea for myself. However, my characters are only sabot based onto the hex bases so I can put them into units when I want to.

  6. Damn fine painting, Christopher. I love the group shot and I'm looking forward to seeing them in AARs down the road.

I hope to follow in your footsteps this year. I'd like to take some of my skirmish armies and base them up like this so they can be used in Impetus, or HC. Cheers!

    1. Thank you very much Monty! They have featured in some AAR's piece by piece, but now I have the ability to run a full AAR in their complete form.:-) Impetus is one of my goals as well.

  7. Impressive unit, the level of detail is astounding. I quite agree, sometimes it's really nice with these complete army or warband shots. It's a nice way to take stock of the work in progress.
I'm also waiting for the Perry bros. new AWI - hoping to get a few good deal at Salute, will you be there too?

    1. Thank you very much BP. It is indeed a useful way to take inventory of your collection which in turn motivates one to do more.
As to Salute sadly that's not likely to happen this year, but I really would like to visit it sometime in the future as it really does give one a chance to see the newest toys straight off the hot press.

    1. Thank you kindly Nick and I'm sure your Late Romans will keep them busy. I would be very pleased indeed if you decided to dip your toes into the AWI and actually you may find you enjoy it more then think like I did with the SYW.

  18. Superb Christopher! Your figures are always great but showing them as a warband really does make them all the nicer. I have a few things to finish off and then its a Saxon Warband here too. These will provide excellent inspiration.

  21. These are just excellent, must resist an order now. Look forward to your new AWI posts as well. BTW, just tried BP for an ACW game last week. Reducing distances like you suggested seem to work and we had a great game...
