Pyrrhic stone throwers and slingers

I was hoping to post two units, but the other one will take a bit longer so decided to post just this one as it's finished and I can get it off the desk and into the cabinet. They are two skirmish units for my Pyrrhic army for TtS or Impetus.

I know you can field slingers, but I'm not sure if I can field stone/rock throwers however I thought they looked cool so decided to paint some up. If I can't use them as such then I'll use them as slingers or javelinmen or something.

The figures are from the fantastic Aventine range and were an absolute pleasure to paint. However, last I looked I didn't see these available for purchase as I thought about getting some more. Perhaps I just missed them or they will come back in stock at some point. The paints I used were mostly Foundry with some Vallejo as usual.

My next post will probably be some more Pyrrhic as that's what's on my desk, but there something else I've been wanting to do.....trying to stay on track. I suppose my next post is up in the air will it be focus that wins or the powerful shiny thing?

Pyrrhic Epirote Phalangite

 

Finished a new Epirote Phalangite unit for my Pyrrhic army bringing me up to 3 out 5 planned. I had forgotten how long it takes me to do one of these and is probably why they are spaced out rather then one after another.

I decided on a light blue for this one and quite like the colors. I'm trying to decide if  I'll do some more units this way or keep each unit an individual in their own colors. As mentioned they do take quite some some time to paint(for me that is) so I probably won't attempt another for a little while and for sure not this challenge, but not a problem as I have plenty of other units for the army to do!

The miniatures are from the superb Aventine range and I highly recommend visiting their site. If you like ancients you will be hard pressed to leave with your basket empty! The colors I used were Foundry, Vallejo and Citadel with some mig pigments for rock dusting.

I have some more Pyrrhic units on my desk at the moment so that will likely be next up on the blog unless I get distracted which can easily happen....

Successor Thureophoroi

 

Now adding Thureophoroi to my slowing growing Pyrrhic/Successor collection. Adding to my Pyrrhic collection will be my primary focus this year which will include both the Pyrrhic and Republic Roman forces as I go along. I'm curious how far I'll manage to stay on target as I can get side tracked as you know if you have been following me for any length of time, but in my defense I have been getting better.

The miniatures themselves are Aventine miniatures which I find to be fantastic and will make up a large share of my collection along with some Wargames Foundry. I would say Aventine miniatures rank among some of my favorite miniatures on the market easily. 

Painting the figures was a lot of fun with some parts going pretty quick(for me) and other parts slowing me down quite a bit depending on the requirements. The colors I used were my usual Foundry and Vallejo, but also a little P3 and Mig pigment mixes for some weathering. A distinguishing feature of Thureophoroi was their large white shields which presents a challenge for us wargamers as it's easy to make them to bright or to dark. I'm quite pleased with the result as it was probably the most time consuming part of the miniature to paint and would have been disappointing if I didn't like the result. 

Thureophoroi provided a light infantry role on the battlefield and were flexible enough to both skirmish with javelins and form up in a phalanx with long spears making them very useful troops indeed. I'm happy I don't have to pronounce their name and rather just write it.:-)

Pyrrhic Epirote and Tarentine Pikemen Phalanx Re-Based

I rebased my Epirote and Tarentine pikemen phalanx onto single figure bases mounted on movement bases. I do not like my units on multiple bases so lately I've been mounting them on one base, but adjusting the depth depending on type of unit.

Since my Spanish Reconquista and Late Roman/Germanic projects are at playable levels needing just a few character models and units to enhance the gaming experience(more Romans on the way) I decided to turn my attention back to my Pyrrhic project as I wanted another large army project to add to the table.

 My Pyrrhic army is starting off point to eventually make my way into the Successor wars, but that some time off as the Pyrrhic army and their Republican Roman adversaries will keep me quite busy!

The figures are from the excellent Aventine Range which I personally think are some of the best figures out there. I expect the collection to include Aventine, Wargames Foundry and Victrix which all go well together so I foresee no problems in acquiring the figures I need.....I already have a lot so it's going to be a very large project indeed!

 It's an interesting project to do as you get to have fun with color and a whole lot of variety. Some models are not to difficult to paint while others can be very challenging in particular those in linothorax

armor. 

The AHPC is coming up and I have a bunch of Pyrrhic stuff primed and ready to go, but before then I'll be posting a few things I've already finished that are from other periods. The next Pyrrhic unit won't be ready for a little while.

Tarentine Pike Phalanx

I've been meaning to come back to my Pyrrhic project for sometime now and finally got around to doing so with some Tarentines. The Tarentines are famous for their cavalry, but they did need infantry as well. These represent some of those citizen soldiers trained to fight in the Hellenistic fashion using pikes. I'm not sure if they switched from hoplites to phalangites through the influence of Pyrrhus or were introduced earlier to this style.

My approach to painting them was to make them colorful and rather individual looking. This served to give them a less uniformed look then the better trained Phyrric phalangites and further distinguish them. It was great fun painting in several bright colors if perhaps time consuming. I also arranged the the them with the heavier armoured to the front and progressively lighter armoured to the rear.

The figures are from the fantastic Pyrrhic range from Aventine miniatures which are easily among the best ancient figures around in my opinion and an absolute pleasure to paint. The shields are transfers from LBM and while I highly recommend them I find transfers do not adhere to oval shields very well(yes I did the pre-cuts) and so that took some extra adjustments. I also painted some extra highlights on the edging and free space on the shields as well as a little on the designs as well to help blend the transfer and bring the design out a little more.

I originally started with a slightly darker basing on my first Pyrrhic unit, but decided I wanted something a little lighter so lighted up the base on this unit to give a more southern Mediterranean look and I am happy with the results. I have since re-did my other units to match this.

Lately Nick and I have been playing a lot of Impetus and having a great time which has really motivated me to continue painting more Impetus units so I will be adding another unit to this project soon. They way things are going this could be a real banner year for me in getting some progress on my ancients/medieval as I want get some cavalry for my Germanics, cavalry and infantry for my Romans so we can game a Roman civil war and light infantry next for my Pyrrhic army plus I purchased some Republican Romans. Lots of plans!

Collecting  a Pyrrhic army is a very fine army to collect as it offers quite a few different troop types to collect along with enemies like Rome, Carthage, Sparta and other Hellenistic opponents which if you collect the enemies leads to Peloponnesian War and Punic Wars and....well you get the idea.
