Saxon Duguth Warriors #2

Back to my Early Saxons for Dux Britanniarum and my 2nd unit of Duguth warriors. The unit is 8 strong instead of 6 as Hamarolf attracted new followers which is nice!:-) I'm happy to be working back on this project as I really dislike using my Vikings as substitutions for Saxons in previous games even though they don't look too far off the mark. I'm going to try very hard to stay with the Saxons and finish them, before moving on to other things.

The figures are all Musketeer and I like them very much indeed and are a real joy to paint! Some of the figures are doubles, but I don't mind as I just paint them a bit different. The shields are a mix of LBM transfers, repainted  Foundry transfers and my own designs with some MIG pigments added. The bases are from Warbases and are arranged more in a shieldwall style as I personally prefer that over the loose skirmish. The figures can be removed from the bases.

Thanks for viewing!:-)

  2. Christopher, that is really a striking stand of Saxons. You created a complete package; great facial details, awesome shield work, and terrific basing composition.

    What is not to love?

  4. Splendid work all round, the painting, the dirty shields and the very nice ground work on the bases all pull together. The MIG pigments are a real good idea too!
Could I ask you who makes the flowers, they look great.

    1. Thank you very much Chris! The flowers are from a company called Heki, but if you look around it's pretty easy to find similar ones if those are not available to you.

  12. Fantastic! On top of your stellar painting, they're so well based I didn't even realize they were in a warlord base!

And how timely is this? I've been playing DB with a friend and was thinking of painting up my own Saxons. If I do, I'll be back for inspiration!

  18. Truly great painting Christopher! I really like your basing and the skin tones you've achieved. And it's good to see someone else went with bigger shields too. :)

    1. Thank you very much Jonas! Actually, I think we are in the majority in regards to the shields. Most I've seen have gone with the bigger shields for various reasons of perhaps the look and also maybe the flexibility to use in several periods not to mention the Saxons themselves mixed it up with small shields and large shields for a period of time before finally settling on the larger ones in the end.

  20. Beautiful work Christopher. As usual, I really enjoy your basework (on top of all the lovely figures, of course). I particularly like your use of sabot basing. I, like you, like the sheildwall look. I'm frequently torn as I'd like to keep my figures virtually touching to give the impression of the tight formation but that can't be easily conveyed, even with sabots. Anyway lovely stuff.

    1. Thank you very much Curt I really do appreciate your support. Indeed shieldwalls are hard to represent, but it can be convincingly done on non sabot Impetus bases that I've seen around if that's any help.:-)

  21. Hi Christopher,

again a very impressive unit. I like the idea of basing the figures one by one and fixing them on another bigger base. So they can be used very flexible. The bases themselves are also outstanding.

    Cheers
